January Sales 2013

This post has been delayed a little longer than I would have liked, for two reasons: Firstly, because I've spent the last week in an essay-related hell-hole, with three essays due in the space of five days. And being the massive procrastinator I am, I hadn't started any of them until about a week before the first deadline. I say I'm going to learn from my mistakes, but we'll see. The other reason was a fiasco with one of my online orders, and my wanting to wait to share all my purchases in one go.
That is the reason for this being such a photo-heavy post, so sorry about that! I do a lot of my shopping in the sales and try to stock up on essentials for the coming months. Anyway, I hope you enjoy seeing what I've bought, and leave me links in the comments if you've done a similar post!
First stop for sales shopping for me is always Matalan; they didn't disappoint this year, with 50% off a huge number of their products. I'm now wishing I'd had the presence of mind to have a peek at their homewares as well, but never mind. I ended up spending just over £30 including postage, and here is what I got for my pennies. I always buy knitwear in the sales, it means you can get better quality than you'd otherwise be able to afford, and I thought this oversized stripey jumper would be the perfect transitional piece when Spring starts to arrive (which I'm hoping will be sooner rather than later, I've had enough of Winter now!!). This was reduced to £9.

I'm on a mission to chuck out all my old baggy pants and novelty knickers, to replace them with pretty matching sets that actually fit me (a lot of my knickers seem to be size 14? I'm a 10, this makes no sense to me!!) so I couldn't resist this pretty set at just £3.50 for the bra and £2 for the knickers. They're a lovely floral satiny material and are both super comfy!

This gorgeous burgundy skater dress fits me SO well, I absolutely love it. The studs on the shoulders are a gorgeous detail too. My only problem is the mesh panel on the front; it's a little deeper than I'd have liked, making wearing a bra extremely obvious. I've mostly been wearing this under jumpers to keep warm, though, so it's not been an issue so far. I may need to invest in a stick-on bra if I ever want to wear this without a jumper, though! This was £11.

Finally (from Matalan), I got this pretty floral print peplum blouse, which I've yet to wear, but I couldn't resist the gorgeous exotic print and sheer style.

Next, on a whim, I decided I wanted a velvet dress, so I promptly ordered the Amy dress from Boohoo for the princely sum of £18 (it's since been further reduced to £15 - typical!). I have to admit, I wasn't sure about this, with its cut-out sides and lace back, but I really like it. The cut-outs are maybe a little higher than I'd have put them, but again I've mostly been wearing this under tops and jumpers anyway so it doesn't bother me too much, yet. The collar studs are a lovely rose-gold colour and are detachable so you could wear them with other collared pieces too!

The last of my online orders was the one that caused the hassle; FD Avenue. I placed the order, received a shipment confirmation email... And then nothing. A week later, I emailed them to see if they could track the parcel for me, and was informed that actually, half my order was out of stock and none of it had been shipped. I wasn't best pleased with this, obviously, but agreed to replace one item with the same in a different colour and receive a refund for the other item which was unavailable. Don't get me wrong, their service once I'd contacted them was great, but I can't help feeling that if I hadn't have questioned why I hadn't received my order, they wouldn't have got in touch. Anyway, here is what I bought. If you're interested, FD Avenue have 50% off everything until the end of the month with the code SALE50.
We all know I'm a fan of bats, so this bat jumper at at £6.50 was perfect - into the basket it went!

I'm trying to build my collection of everyday skirts a little, so I chose a jersey skater skirt in black - this was the item I switched, and ended up with it in burgundy, which I also love so that's fine. At just £5, this is a perfect wardrobe staple to dress up or down.

Finally, I got this knitted Aztec print skirt for just £5 - this is so warm and comfy, I love it! I've linked to the red version, mine was actually purple, but that's now out of stock.

I only had a quick run round the shops in town as I hate the sales crowds, so I stuck to what I knew I wanted. The beauty section in TK Maxx generally has a good knock-down on gift sets, so I like to have a browse in there. I didn't end up with much apart from these little skincare gems, which I'll be reviewing individually over the coming weeks. These were £3.99 each, and I've since been back and bought a moisturiser from the same range for £4.99.

I love Body Shop Body Butters but I just can't justify them at full price, so I bought a couple in their 50% off sale - at £6.50 each, they're a bit more reasonable. Ginger Sparkle smells amazing, I've not started using Vineyard Peach yet but that was also lovely when I sniffed the tester pot!

I decided I'd see what all the Yankee Candle fuss was about in Clinton Cards, and bought a few of these little sample candles. The Cinnamon one (which I forgot to photograph before lighting, whoops) and the Spiced Apple were Christmas lines, reduced to 89p each, and the Coconut and Melon were £1.80 each. So far, I have to say, I love them - they've made sitting inside writing essays almost bearable!

Finally, Accessorize. I love their stationery, especially the stickers, so I usually buy a couple of sheets in their sale. I think these were about £1.20 per sheet. I also treated myself to some pretty knickers, the blue pair were £3 and the peach were £3.50. Actually, I bought a necklace and a bracelet as well, but I don't seem to have taken photos of those - whoops!

What do you think? Did you grab any bargains in the sales? I hope you enjoyed your peek at my purchases, and well done if you made it through the whole list!
I seem to be in one of the few places in the UK with no snow, for which I am eternally grateful (I hate the stuff!), so I might head out for a walk in the sunshine this afternoon! Have you had any snow? I hope the New Year is treating you all well, so far.

  1. Great post! I love having a nose at other people's purchases! I bought a few things from Urban Outfitters in the sale, everything else I bought somehow ended up full price - i'm a terrible sale shopper!

As for snow it's really deep here!!! I love the snow normally but I'm just so cold today! Brrrrrr

  2. I held back half of my haul because I was waiting on a delivery from Missguided, but when I finally got it, they sent me the wrong dress... and then to add insult to injury, they are now sold out.. angry isn't even the word.. however they have given me a discount code as sorry which softens the blow.

    Great haul!

  4. I love seeing what other people have bought, and am trying reeeally hard not to buy anything else this month, but I've now seen a fair few things on the fdavenue site!

Also it snows where I live for a few minutes, then melts and then rains. I live near the sea so we rarely get snow! Which I'm happy and sad about xx
